The Apprentices

As I was walking back home one night, I caught a glimpse of this scene. A dimly lit, narrow hallway with wooden panels and a circular window, all so typical of the old quarters of Kyôto and its secretive ways. Two maiko and their okami-san, their “mother”, were standing there, waiting. You read it right. These are not geiko, or more commonly known as geisha. What’s the difference? None, but the region where you are. “Geisha” is used in Tôkyô, whereas “geiko” is used in Kyôto. But how can you know, after all it’s the middle of the night and it’s dark out there. Well, it’s pretty easy actually. Geiko wear more subtle kimonos, a sign of the acquired maturity of their art and skills. On the other hand, maiko are still apprentices, perfecting the musical and cultural artistry required to become a full geiko. A maiko's outfit is more visually appealing, drawing attention away from her lack of experience and knowledge. Other hints can help you identify between both. The obi, the sash around the waist, is long when a geiko’s will be classic and tucked in. The hair ornaments are more elaborate, with intricate flower designs that will change with the passing ; the hairstyle are totally different and will help you tell one from the other.

Qu’est-ce qu’un tirage d’art ? Fine art prints differ from standard prints through the use of high-quality art papers and pigmented inks, as well as their limited edition, signed and numbered, accompanied by a certificate of authenticity. This type of printing ensures fade resistance and superior durability, often used by museums and galleries to preserve works for several decades.
